Trustees

Our Trustees include church leaders and members from churches across Torbay representing different denominations as we are an ecumenical organisation.

Meeting monthly, the trustees work with the project manager to further the vision of LiNX, that every young person in Torbay is enabled to reach their full potential.

Rev Tim Smith (Chairperson), Mr Philip Miles (Company Secretary), Mr David Borrows, Mrs Jackie Olsen and Mr David Harwood (Treasures).

We are always interested to hear from people who might want to join this team.  Here are some words from Jackie Olsen.

I am Jackie Olsen, the newest of the LiNX trustees.  I joined the team about four months ago and I am definitely still getting to grips with the role!  I love the vision of LiNX, 'to enable young people to reach their full potential', as this has been part of my own, personal hope that I have taken into my work for many years!

I am a social worker by profession and I have worked with children and young people throughout my career.  Currently I am the Team Leader of the Torbay Primary Mental Health Work Team, which is the school based part of the child and adolescent mental service (CAMHS).  In my role I work closely with Torbay Schools to support the emotional health and wellbeing of their students.  In the past I have worked within Youth Offending Teams, further education colleges and special schools.

Alongside this I am a wife and Mum, I am also a foster carer to a young person with some complex needs, which gives me a very different perspective to the challenges and difficulties that some young people face.

I am keen to support the LiNX workers in our schools and also to encourage the development of positive working relationships across a variety of agencies, both statutory and voluntary.  In these times of austerity there are real opportunities for organisations like LiNX to step up and become an integral part of the guidance and support structures that young people need and deserve. LiNX's commitment to reach out and connect with all young people in Torbay opens up so many exciting opportunities to grow and develop relationships, and ultimately help young people to take on a 'God perspective' of themselves and their lives.

As I settle in to my role I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know more of the LiNX team and supporters.

LiNX was established in 1997 to resource secondary schools and support students in every aspect of their development. We currently employ 3 full time and 2 part time schools workers to resource all 9 of the mainstream secondary schools in Torbay by supporting the delivery of religious education and health education. By working with local youth workers and volunteers from churches we seek to build links between schools and their community for the benefit of young people.

Elevate began in 2010 with the aim to help young people connect to the local church youth works and is a partnership project with local churches who host, volunteer and co-lead the summer activity week for young people. Young people enjoy a full week of different activities, workshops and day trips before they celebrate together at the end of the week with the Grand Finale! More young people are joining the fun each year!

We believe in encouraging, empowering and equipping young people as they grow in their gifts and skills, particularly in leadership.  We want to partner with young leaders in schools and all across our community to reach out to all young people in Torbay.

Alongside opportunities for young people to lead in Christian Unions in their own schools in 2015 we lunched a specific stream within our Elevate summer week to train and support young leaders, providing opportunities for them to lead and serve during the week.

The mentoring project – Rise Up Mentoring – is another helpful way for church members to be equipped to mentor young people from within their congregations.

We support the work of Torbay School Pastors as our part time schools worker Charlie Haywood is on the management team and leads Monday patrols.

School Pastors currently patrol around The Spires Academy, St Cuthbert Mayne School, Torquay Academy and Torquay Boys Grammar School in Torquay on Monday and Friday afternoons every week from 2:45pm – 4:15pm.

The role of School Pastors is to patrol the area around both schools and the local neighbourhood. They start outside the school gates at The Spires at 2.50pm, talking to the pupils as they leave. Once pupils have left the school, School Pastors patrol the area around Torquay United Football ground (which is next to the school), including a large field, children’s playground and streets leading to the main bus routes. Then they walk down to St Cuthbert Mayne School and patrol as pupils leave, listening to them and caring for them.
